Kerala Assembly New Speaker N Shakthan. [highlight]N Shakthan the congress legislator and deputy speaker[/highlight] was elected as Kerala Assembly Speaker on 12th March 2015. Shakthan elected as speaker by defeating CPI (M)
candidate P Aysha Potty by 74 to 66 votes.
[highlight]G Kathikeyan[/highlight] was the speaker before Shakthan. Karthikeyan died on 7 March 2015 in Bangalore with health problems.
Shakthan resigned to his Deputy Speaker post of the assembly before the speaker post contest on 10 March 2015.
Shakthan’s election as the speaker was announced by the Pro-term speaker Dominic Presentation of Congress.

[highlight]On 5 May 1951 Shakthan Born at Kanjiramkulam, Shakthan came from Nadar community. It is a powerful segment in Southern Kerala.[/highlight]
He elected as an MLA from Kattakada constituency in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala
Through trade union he started his political career in Kerala.
In 1982 he was elected to the Legislative assembly to the state from Kovalam constituency for the first time.
in 2001 and 2006 Shakthan elected again to the Legislative assembly of congress as a Representative from Nemom constituency.
Shakthan is an MLA from Kattakada constituency of Thiruvananthapuram right now. In 2011 Shakthan was elected as an MLA.
He served as a Minister for Transport in state cabinet in Oommen Chandy government from 2004 to 2006.
