Manohar Parrikar commissioned ‘INS Chennai’ missile destroyer warship
Manohar Parrikar, the Defence Minister of India commissioned INS Chennai, an idigenously built missile destroyer in to the navy force. This is a historic day for the Indian Navy,” Defence Minister Parikar said, lauding the indigenously designed and constructed, Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer built by Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL) in Mumbai.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba and top officers of Western Naval Command and other dignitaries also attended the program.
On 16 August, 2014 INS Kolkata was first ship in this class, the second one is IKS Kochi which was commissioned on 30th Sep 2015.
Before INS Chennai will assigned to the Western Fleet and based in Mumbai, it will undergo some additional sea trials of the ship-borne systems.
INS Chennai is 164 mt length and displacement of over 7,500 tons. It is Indian Navy’s largest destroyer.
INS Chennai is armed with supersonic surface-to-surface BrahMos missiles and Barak-8 long range surface-to-air missiles.
